The day in one line: AI-spending fears came back hard: the Nasdaq fell -2.60%, its worst day since June, and the S&P 500 -1.21% to 7,663.43, while Brent jumped above $113 on Iran strike reports and investors piled into Treasurys and defensive stocks. Our morning calls scored 9/10.

The Dow ended flat and the Russell 2000 edged up, so this was a tech problem, not a broad one. Treasurys rallied hard: the 10-year fell about 17 bp to 4.96% and the 2-year about 16 bp to 4.65%. Brent settled at $113.17, its highest since May, after reports that the U.S. and Israel plan renewed strikes on Iran after the midterms, and President Trump said Washington is not negotiating with Tehran. Gold fell more than 2.5% and bitcoin slid to about $81,200.

Look ahead — Friday, Oct 23

Friday brings flash PMIs and final consumer sentiment, but the tape will trade on AI financing and Iran headlines. Bull (25%): a relief bounce in chips as yields stay low and oil cools. Base (45%): a choppy, mixed day with defensives still favored. Bear (30%): more AI-credit worry and an oil spike extend the tech slide. Wick’s pick: Base.calendarFlash PMI + UMichGoogle Calendar

What to watch

  • Before the open: American Express (AXP) Q3 earnings (call 8:30 AM) and SLB Q3 earnings.calendarSLB Q3Google CalendarcalendarAXP Q3Google Calendar
  • 9:45 AM: S&P Global flash PMIs for October, then 10:00 AM: final University of Michigan sentiment.calendar.icsGoogle Calendar
  • 1:00 PM: Baker Hughes US rig count.
  • ESMO Congress 2026 opens in Madrid (Oct 23–27), with the full Merck and Moderna vaccine data in focus.calendar.icsGoogle Calendar
  • iPhone Duo goes on sale.

Wick's take: Today wasn’t about weak earnings; Meta, Lam and SpaceX all beat. It was about the bill for AI and who pays it, and that worry can stay longer than one session. The drop in yields is a real cushion, so we would not chase the selloff, but we would wait for chips to stop making new lows before buying the dip.
